Madam, - Barry Walsh (Letters July 24th) claims that it was bizarre that Sinn Féin sent Gerry Adams and Bairbre De Brún to meet President Sarkozy on his recent whirlwind tour of Dublin.
Barry, as some of your readers may know, is the president of Young Fine Gael (YFG) and responsible for the Lisbon posters which some people considered to be almost pornographic that YFG produced during the Lisbon referendum campaign. Now those posters were truly bizarre.
Gerry Adams is the leader of Sinn Féin, a party which, as any unbiased observer will tell you, was a key element in mobilising many thousands of people to come out and vote No. Bairbre De Brún, as a member of the European Parliament, was an excellent choice to represent Sinn Féin at the meeting with Sarkozy. Barry complains that they are both members of a foreign parliament, whatever that may mean. What Mr Walsh is clearly implying, however, is that they are "foreigners" and if so maybe someone from the grown-up section of Fine Gael can explain what he means? - Yours, etc,
JOE HICKEY,
Moyross,
Limerick.
