A Chara, Your report (August 5th) of the finding and proposed auction of the paintings of George Marston, depicting aspects of the Antarctic adventure of Shackleton, cites Kilkee (Cill Chaoi), Co Clare, as the explorer's birthplace. The people of Kilkea (Cill Chathaigh), Co Kildare, may have something to say about this.
It would have been an appropriate and opportune occasion to mention the Irish Antarctic Adventure 1997 (South Aris) which will attempt to retrace Shackleton's journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia, in a replica of the lifeboat used. This will be named after the other Irishman in the team, Tom Crean from Kerry. A poster which has been produced to raise funds for the expedition features a print of one of Marston's paintings.
