Sir, – Two articles in last Saturday’s Irish Times (November 12th) open up an interesting perspective: Rosita Boland’s report about the long nights and endless waits in hospital emergency departments (Weekend Review) and Ronan McGreevy’s article on the salaries of RTÉ’s 10 best-paid presenters (Home News).

The top 10 presenters earned a combined total of €3,950,000 in 2009. A staff nurse earns in the region of €35,000 per annum.

Reducing the salaries of the top 10 RTÉ presenters to €100,000 each (by most people’s standards still an excellent wage) would save €2,950,000 per annum, which would allow to employ an additional 84 nurses. – Yours, etc,
