Sir, – In the course of the past week, a newsreader for the BBC said the Olympic torch was coming to London, carried in the Daly Lamp. In fact it is “The Davy Lamp”, invented by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1816 for the safety of miners. His cousin Edmund Davy, who worked with him, was a professor of chemistry, at the Royal Cork Institution from 1813, and the RDS from 1826.

This is a nice link for Ireland, and the London Olympics, as the Torch has been carried all over the world in the Davy Lamp. – Yours, etc,
