Sir, - I read with dismay the observations of the president of the Irish Heart Foundation that the Government has reneged on the appointment of new cardiologists. The mortality rates in Ireland from heart disease, coupled with the low level of cardiologists, raises serious questions about the Government's ability to understand that behind these appalling statistics are people whose lives are prematurely ended and whose families are devastated.
Having lost my beloved wife and father to heart conditions I call upon the Irish Government, in particular the Ministers for Finance and Health, to allocate the appropriate resources and appoint the new cardiologists as promised. - Yours, etc.,
ALBERT KEATING,
