Sir, – "Orange is there [on the Tricolour] for a reason" (Shane Murphy, March 29th).What reason? Is there a definitive explanation for the appearance of the colour orange on An Bhratach Náisiúnta? I know there is a lot of myths and urban legends surrounding its presence on the emblem; but do any of them have a degree of validity? Strictly speaking, there is no official reason why the colours on the national flag should be green, white and orange. Article 7 of Bunreacht na hÉireann merely states: "The national flag is the tricolour of green, white and orange". – Yours, etc,
PAUL DELANEY,
