A chara, - I too have winced at Lewis and Loose for Luas (Diarmaid O Murchadha, 9 October) but I now manage to chuckle instead. And there are countless others too: not many years ago, for instance, the Minister for Finance of the day (one mustn't mention names in these testy times!), having said that he could have went [sic] for a bigger deficit, stated (as if he wished to show that his was a balanced bilingualism) that he intended to allocate a particular sum of taxpayers' money to shag us (Teagasc, my friend). Yes, low linguistic standards in high and medium (of communication) places, indeed. A, faire fuinn! A, faire go brach! - Is mise, etc. Roibeard O hUrdail,
