Sir, - Seldom is the day that I do not enjoy struggling to complete the Simplex crossword. Last Tuesday it all came down to two final clues, one of which I never got, the second I completed but with a sense of queasiness.

The clue in question (for 29 down) was "An indigenous people of S. Africa". The solution was "Kaffir". Although I believe that Kaffir is an old designation of the Xhosa tribe, my understanding is that it is an extremely offensive label and I am surprised that the Simplex would use it.

I suppose we as Irish should not object to a South African doing a crossword in Capetown with a clue, "An indigenous people of Ireland", whose solution is "Paddy". - Yours, etc.,
