Sir, – The concept of freedom of information (FOI), whereby citizens (mostly journalists and politicians, in practice) can access official documentation, is worthy and laudable.

However, given the practice of widespread avoidance of proper minuting of many key meetings and exchanges, and the heavy redaction imposed when FOI material is released, one wonders what’s the point.

There should be a dedicated and comprehensive system of minuting established, plus a relaxation of the impulse to redact, bar a national security issue arising. – Yours, etc,

JIM COSGROVE,

A chara, – It would be nice, for once, for politicians and civil servants to do what’s right for the taxpayer at the time with full transparency, rather than a public inquiry after the fact. Or is that suggestion too radical? – Is mise,

GARETH T CLIFFORD,

Stillorgan,
