Siteserv controversy

Sir, – You report that Minister for Finance Michael Noonan, when questioned by RTÉ's Sean O'Rourke about what many perceive as his being "less than forthcoming with information about the controversy surrounding the sale of Siteserv by IBRC", refused to address the issue and resorted instead to accusing RTÉ itself of "sitting on reports for 12 months" ("Tensions threaten TV licence fee plan", April 30th).

What one has to do with the other, in the context of the interview, God only knows.

But surely, given all we have been through, we deserve better than such adolescent tactics from a senior member of Government on this very serious matter. Is it any wonder we are engulfed, in equal measure, by cynicism and despair? – Yours, etc,

JIM O’SULLIVAN,

Sir, – Fintan O'Toole's piece ("The geometry of the Irish scandal – the perfect circle", Opinion & Analysis, April 28th) made for depressing reading – mainly because it rang so true. In Shakespeare's time, flags were hung above the Globe Theatre to advertise the type of play on offer – a black flag for tragedy, white for comedy and red for history. I suggest a new tricolour of black, white and red is raised over Government Buildings to advertise this latest drama. – Yours, etc,

ALISON HACKETT,
