Sir, - Mr Gahan's suggestion (July 30th) that slow loads be restricted to off peak hours is a good one, but misses the crucial point. Delays are not the major problem; those who have to use the road, live with it. Personal safety is uppermost.
This is the present Southern Cross route, carrying 20,000 vehicles a day along a donkey track. On Hillcrest Road it is 12 feet wide in places, hardly wide enough for cars to pass, never mind slow loads, JCBs and buses. It is lethal for pedestrians. Yet there are no initiatives of any kind to acknowledge the crisis no traffic restrictions, no apparent speed limit; nobody cares.
