Sir, – It is with delight I welcome Tuesday's report in The Irish Times about the beginning in six weeks of the construction of the cycle path linking Clontarf's wooden bridge and causeway, part of the Sutton to Sandycove cycle path and proposed walkway ("Construction of €5m Dublin cycle path to start in six weeks").
The only comparable level of excitement I've felt was when I read, also in The Irish Times, on March 31st, 2014, that work on the Dublin Bay cycle path was to begin that summer, or on May 13th, 2013 that work was to start. For a few moments I thought this week's announcement was about yet another new proposed cycle path that would not actually be built but then realised it was the same one for which the council presented the plan reported in February 12th, 2009.
I also note that the new proposed date for the proposed start of the proposed work in Clontarf is April 1st this year. It is heartening that even in these bleak times there remains a sense of the absurd. – Yours, etc, DES KELLY Drumcondra, Dublin 9.
