Sir, - Am I alone in suggesting that the roadworks in the Glen of the Downs are breaking all records for slow progress? Why is it that work on these much-needed and long-awaited improvements only start long after the sun has risen and finish hours before sunset? - and that for only five days a week! This hardly meets the NRA's commitment to a 21st century type roads programme. On my way to work this morning I counted nearly 40 pieces of expensive plant and equipment still deep in slumber gathering dust and depreciation awaiting their wake-up call at 7.30 a.m. At 6 p.m' they all go home for tea.

With a little imagination, a few extra hours worked during daylight and Saturday working the misery, danger and inconvenience caused by these works could easily have been shortened by a year _ but hush my mouth - might waken the workers! - Yours, etc.,

Douglas Beattie, Delgany, Co Wicklow.
