Smoking On Trains

Sir, - Why is smoking not only still permitted but indulged on trains?

Sir, - Why is smoking not only still permitted but indulged on trains?

I travelled recently on a Saturday afternoon train from Limerick to Dublin, via Ballybrophy. From Limerick to Ballybrophy there were two carriages on the train - one smoking, one non-smoking. At Ballybrophy, we got on the Dublin train. As has happened previously, the only places with seats available were the smoking carriages. Again as previously, most of the seats were taken up by non-smoking adults, many of them with young children. It appeared that about a quarter of the people in the carriage were actively smoking.

We cannot smoke in public buildings - how is it we can smoke on public transport? - Yours, etc.,

Sarah Greene,
