Smug cyclists

Sir, – Conor Pope writes about the health benefits that can be attributed to cycling to work ("Lancet study reveals conclusive benefits of getting on your bike", March 16th).

In reporting on such a positive study, why did the author feel the need to start with a derogatory “Smug cyclists have yet another reason to pat themselves on the back”? How does the act of travelling by bike make one smug?

Along with the health benefits it offers, cycling places fewer burdens on our infrastructure, environment and cities in general. Brand the fuel-guzzling SUV drivers as smug, but hands off the cyclists. – Yours, etc,

GRACE CUNNINGHAM,
