Madam, - George Bush's statement that the US "will hand over authority to a sovereign Iraqi government" tells us very succinctly what is wrong with his policy on Iraq.

The sovereign authority of a country such as Iraq cannot be usurped by a foreign power and even if a country is invaded, sovereignty still resides with the people.

In this instance Bush has the arrogance to believe that he has the right to take and give sovereignty as he pleases to suit his misguided foreign policy.

Freedom from external control is an integral part of a nation's sovereignty. Iraq needs that freedom now so that its people can determine their own destiny and in time live in peace and justice in an independent state finally freed from the imperial designs of the West. - Yours, etc.,
