Sir, - I would suggest your assumption (editorial, September 11th) that most parents are anti corporal punishment is completely inaccurate, and to suspect any of its advocates as having ulterior motives is fanciful. Contrary to your opinion, most of my friends and associates firmly believe in a swift smack when it is absolutely necessary, I am sure there are very few of us who did not deserve a "good hiding" at some stage of our childhood.
I think you have totally misjudged the mood of the country on that issue. It is indicative of the liberal minded lunacy that continues to allow the type of situation to which you refer, with the European Court of Justice, to exist.
"Spare the rod and spoil the child" is as true today as it ever was. I confidently predict we would have a more courteous and respectful youth today if we would rekindle some of the values of yesteryear. - Yours, etc.,
