Sir, - In response to Mr Franklin's letter (September 13th), I witnessed a father "swiftly smacking" a two year old (approximately) child for getting his hands covered in sand on Seapoint Beach, Termonfeckin, Co Louth on Sunday, September 8th. This "smacking" continued for over an hour.
I shudder to think what his punishment may have been had the child committed a more serious" offence, such as spilling the sugar! I think "use the rod and ruin the child" would he much more appropriate. - Yours, etc.,
