Sir, - Debate rages as to whether or not enough is being done to combat speeding on the roads. Let me relate my experience.
It was bank holiday weekend last April. I was heading west along the N4. Driving along the dual carriageway past Heuston Station I was signalled to stop by a garda. He asked if I knew the speed limit. I assumed it was 40mph. In fact it was 30mph and his speed detector indicated my speed at 42mph so he could have easily ticketed me. Instead he gave me a warning about speeding and sent me on my way.
What impressed me was the fact the garda was targetting people at the start of their journies, not irritating them by dispensing tickets but firmly implanting the notion of safer driving.
Prevention is better than cure and I commend the Garda for this kind of initiative. It is not expensive yet it yields very positive results. - Yours, etc.,
