Sir, – I couldn’t agree more with Padhraic Mulpeter (Letters, July 28th) regarding motorists who flash their lights warning oncoming traffic of the presence of speed cameras.
Indeed it is not, as he says, a game. It’s a revenue gathering exercise!

Sir, – I would like to applaud Moyagh Murdock and Liz O’Donnell, from the Road Safety Authority, for bringing up the subject of personal responsibility regarding road safety.
For too long this fundamental aspect of road safety has been lacking in the ongoing discussion on the subject.

Sir, – The road outside my gate is about six yards across, has no hard shoulder, has several blind bends and is often used by agricultural machinery. The speed limit on it is 80kph. At the end of it is the old N11 which is 15 yards wide, has hard shoulders and had its bends smoothed out over the years when it was the main road.
This stretch has had no serious accident since being bypassed, and has fewer houses than the road by my gate, yet has a speed limit of 60kph and is haunted by a camera van, doubtless because of the ease with which fish in a barrel may be shot.
In this latter case it is hard to disapprove of motorists who flash to warn others of the van’s presence.
