Sir, - I am appalled at the way some people are trying to run down plans for Sports Campus Ireland. I spent some time recently in Auckland, New Zealand, a city with the same population as Dublin. Their sports facilities, the way they cater for all sports with emphasis on children and youth, and the success they have enjoyed would all put us to shame.
They have practically zero joy-riding, teenage alcohol abuse and drug problems. They have invested in their youth and are now reaping the rewards. How foolish we are if we do not take up this wonderful opportunity to invest in our youth, and point them in a healthy sports direction instead of letting so many turn to petty crime, drug and alcohol abuse as their only forms of recreation. - Yours, etc.,
