Sir, I have just read with deep misgivings, Professor. St alley's letter concerning stonework restoration in St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny. I speak not as an architectural expert, but rather as one who, for nine years in the 1970s as cathedral organist, lived in The Close across from the west door, specifically mentioned in the letter; and so one who loved and loves the western facade of that elegant building.
I am shocked to hear about what sounds like heavy handed and misguided insensitivity. Heaven knows, we have all too few examples of intact mediaeval church-building of such high quality that we can afford such devastation.
