A chara, – Gary Branigan, in Olivia Kelly’s news report (“Historian says Luas line passing Trinity would destroy well associated with St Patrick”, Home News, July 23rd) is incorrect when he states that references to St Patrick’s Well in Nassau Street were lost when the street was renamed in the 18th century.
In fact, the Irish version of Nassau Street, Sráid Thobar Pádraig (St Patrick’s Well Street) was obliterated by Dublin City Council on June 13th and renamed Sráid Nassau. This was done on the advice of the placenames branch of the Department of the Gaeltacht and accepted without question by our elected representatives on Dublin City Council. I congratulate Mr Branigan on his attempt to preserve St Patrick’s Well, and I would also request Dublin City Council to restore the Irish version of the name. – Is mise,
