Sir, - Do we need two 80,000-seat stadiums to accommodate our growing interest in high-profile sports? I think most people would agree that we do not.
But then we don't have two stadiums, or for that matter even one.
What we do have is a half-built, poorly designed structure, overshadowing a densely populated area in the north inner city.
This stadium is owned and run by the Gaelic Athletic Association for its own games and, from time to time, other promotions that it might deem acceptable and in accordance with its own strict rules governing the stadium's use.
While the government of the day might be able to speed up the decision to open Croke Park to other sports, we would still have the problem of important decisions regarding the use of the stadium being made by people who have a sporting agenda of their own.
How could this be generally accepted as a national stadium? Wouldn't it be more likely to be viewed by the majority of our Northern neighbours as a nationalist stadium? - Yours, etc.,
Niall Ginty, Howth Road, Killester, Dublin 5.
