Star Wars and the Skelligs

Sir, – Having just seen the latest Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, I have to disagree with Ultan Ó Broin (December 24th) on the role of the Skelligs therein. The only word to describe the moment the islands are featured in the film is awesome. No computer-generated trickery can better what nature has laid on off the coast of Kerry. It is a most fitting location, and whoever came up with the idea of using it is to be commended.

How typically Irish, however, is the opposition to the use of the Skelligs in The Force Awakens. "Why let a piece of our Emerald Isle to be used in the fastest-grossing film of all time?" the critics moan in their sniffiness. "Let's keep our light firmly under that bushel lest anybody might appreciate us!" – Yours, etc,
