Sir, – Simon Carswell referred to the controversial flag used by the Confederacy in the US Civil War as the "Stars and Bars" (American Letter, June 27th).
While the first official national flag (but not the last) used by the Confederacy was indeed called the Stars and Bars, the popular flag that Dylann Roof was photographed with, and the flag that is the subject of intense debate, is not the Stars and Bars, but is the Second Confederate Navy Jack and was also adopted as the battle flag of General Lee’s army of Northern Virginia.
This flag was never an official flag of the Confederate States of America, despite popular belief. – Yours, etc,
JORDAN MARKEY,
