A chara, - I don't usually bother to reply to Kevin Myers's pro-British outpourings, but his latest contribution (Irishman's Diary, October 3rd), merits some comment. In the name of pluralism, no less, he berates the Taoiseach for honouring the memory and sacrifice of Kevin Barry and nine other brave Irish patriots. This, Myers intones, is a single-sided approach.
If Myers were really a pluralist, he would welcome the commemoration of the dead of both the British and the Irish sides in the various conflicts of that time. But he is only willing to honour British dead. His opposition to the honouring of Kevin Barry shows in fact that he's no pluralist at all: just an old-fashioned opponent of Irish freedom.
