Sir, - In response to recent expressions of discontent from some third-level institutions about Leaving Certificate music, the new syllabus has dramatically reversed the decline in the number of students taking music. It offers new routes into the subject for those whose interests lie outside the confines of 18th- and 19th-century classical music. It offers students the opportunity of taking the subject for its own sake, rather than because they want to enter third-level education. -Yours, etc.,
David Harold Cox, Professor of Music, University College Cork.
