Sir, - On our way to Kilmore Quay recently, my Dublin grandson remarked, "You'd be mad to buy a new car down here on these roads." These roads are all around us, suffering as much from patched potholes as from the new lot, with streaks of dried-off molten matter skittered around to increase the jolting. Even a journey on a bicycle is a nightmare.
Mr Noel Dempsey, in his "little-book-of-calm" tones, assured us that the extra tax he was putting on the motorist would forever more put an end to complaints about the roads. Well, when?
There is little use putting blue flags on our beaches down here (and we boast a few), if your car is half-wrecked on arrival. It is extraordinary that every by-road was completely tarmacadamed when we were the poor relations of Europe. - Yours, etc., Maureen Barry,
Duncormick,
Co Wexford.
