Sir, - Patsy McGarry's assessment of the Catholic Church (Weekend June 8th) is most unfair and unbalanced. Every negative event in the recent history of the Church is presented in the worst light possible. Everything good is ignored. "A society dominated by whited sepulchres and broods of vipers" hits a new low.
The actions of a number of clergy and religious merit nothing but condemnation. But a sense of proportion is needed. When I look at the immense good being done by our local clergy, of all churches, at all levels of community life - and the same can be said all over the country - the injustice of attacks such as Mr McGarry's, and the hurt they must cause, are all the harder to take. - Yours, etc.,
