Sir, - May I be allowed space to express my anger at Mr McCreevy's concerns as expressed in the aftermath of the special cabinet meeting in Dundalk? Where was this preoccupation with value when he doled out millions of pounds to preserve the status quo in Croke Park, bribed the FAI to abandon a commercially sponsored stadium of its own and earmarked unspecified millions for a stadium nobody wants?

His insistence on value for money rather than an equitable quality service will come as a bitter pill to the thousands of anxious patients queuing for treatment in understaffed and often ill-equipped oncology units. It will also disappoint those who are forced to undertake long daily journeys for radiological treatment and those who are waiting for scarce theatre beds in our major hospitals. For many, this Cabinet meeting may have been their last hope. They deserved better.

It seems that some in this government are preoccupied with their own "Theatre of Dreams", as opposed to the theatres desired by their constituents. - Yours, etc.,

Sean Higgins, Beabeg, Drogheda, Co Louth.
