Sir, – In reviewing your editorial ("Credibility and trust needed", September 10th), I was surprised to read that the Taoiseach was aware of the existence of Northern Ireland. Fine Gael's policy on the North during their last four years in Government is reminiscent of schooldays gone by, where homework was mysteriously eaten by the dog. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I refer to the article concerning Arlene Foster "From 'baby barrister' to acting First Minister" (September 11th).

The constituency of Fermanagh/South Tyrone could hardly be called part of the “Protestant Border heartland” as it returns an equal three nationalist and three unionist Assembly members and, but for a Sinn Féin/SDLP split of the nationalist vote and the putting forward of a unified unionist candidate in the recent Westminster election, would have resulted in Sinn Féin retaining this seat, as the nationalist population in the constituency is larger than the unionist. – Yours, etc,

DAVE KAVANAGH,

Clontarf,

Dublin 3.
