Madam, – Ministers, TDs, economists and other such enlightened persons consistently highlight the need for a highly educated and skilled labour force to pull Ireland out of the current economic crisis. I am a final-year accountancy student, working full-time, paying taxes and attending college part-time. College lectures finish at 9.30pm and the college is based in the city centre. I pay over €1,000 a year for the privilege of using public transport.

Due to existing public transport provisions, the earliest time I arrive home is midnight. My home is 20 miles from O’Connell Street, in one of the most highly populated commuter towns. A flight from Dublin to Milan, a distance of 866 miles, takes less time.

I suppose this is what the Government would describe as “supporting” those who are trying to upskill. – Yours, etc,
