Students and advertising

Sir, – Irish Rail’s student fares advertisement smacks of condescension. One depicts a young man, looking wretched and dirty, pouring water from a kettle into a boot. The other is of a young women, looking equally miserable, eating corn flakes out of a frying pan. Under both images, it reads, “Go home students, you need looking after”.

That a State-affiliated organisation feels it is acceptable to mock a whole segment of society seems to me an indication of a prejudice that doesn’t think students are proper adults capable of looking after themselves. It is annoying and shows a lousy attitude on the part of those who came up with it. – Yours, etc,
