Sugar tax and personal responsibility

Sir, – When will we will finally come to accept that we are ultimately responsible for our health, life and happiness, and that taking control can result in a dramatic improvement in health, self-confidence and sense of well-being?

Following the imposition of a sugar tax in the UK our new minister for health will be encouraged to follow suit in Ireland by the posse of well-organised and vocal activists.

Obesity is undoubtedly an issue. However, taking personal responsibility for healthy eating should be the primary focus for government policy.

We should start with the school curriculum to include a mandatory refreshed version of home economics in primary schools with a focus on healthy eating.

Catching the headlines with a sugar tax will not solve the problem and perpetuates the stereotype that our people can not decide for themselves and take responsibility for their well-being.
