Sir, - What on earth is the sense of minting the new 1 cent euro coins?
These will be worth even less than our present 1p coin, and certainly less valuable than the pre-war farthing, abandoned long before decimalisation.
In the absence of the farthing it was common for shopkeepers in the 1930s to substitute a packet of pins for a farthing change. Should the 1 cent be abolished, as it should be, such a substitution would be unneccessary, for it is not worth even two pins. - Yours, etc.,
