Madam, – I rely on newspapers to inform me in matters of which I know little – the economic crisis, the courts, the workings of government etc. Hence I am dismayed when I read something of which I do have some knowledge – medicine – and find that it is either comment that is uninformed or facts that are wrong. Sylvia Thompson’s article on infertility (HealthPlus, March 30th) tells us that various combinations of Chinese medicine, reflexology and chiropractic, among others, will be of benefit to couples wishing to conceive.

Infertility is a complex condition with biological, psychological and social contributory factors. However, as with any other medical condition, the assortments of wacky pseudo-therapies, dispensed for profit by the “alternative” health lobby are without a shred of meaningful, independent evidence. Ms Thompson’s continued un-critical articles amount to little more than advertisements for the powerful and increasingly pervasive “alternative” health industry. – Yours, etc,
