Sir, - It was, as usual, invigorating to read Ian Hill's review of the exhibition of paintings by, among others, Felim Egan at the Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast (December 20th). He must surely have been articulating what all of us were thinking.
The artist obviously wasn't concerned merely with your ordinary "threnody" (a dime a dozen, I always think) or even the ubiquitous "estuarine threnody" (galleries are full of that stuff). Of course, it's bleeding obvious, it was "his familiar spare introspective estuarine threnody" that motivated him.
At last, a critic who takes up, to the challenge set by the artist. While the work remains totally, incomprehensible, Ian's criticism rises to the occasion and becomes, effortlessly, the same. - Yours, etc.,
