Madam, - The debate on the particular hue of the Taoiseach's coat is somewhat academic. Whether or not he is a socialist, the Taoiseach is a pragmatist. Few commentators have applauded the merits of this political skill.

Yes, some may say that he is a masterfly negotiator, but they stop short of pointing to the tangible benefits of the stable and coherent Government which he has provided over the past seven years.

Throughout his ten years as leader of Fianna Fáil, Bertie Ahern has stood by his inclusive agenda. Despite the reams of media comment suggesting otherwise, economic growth and social inclusion are not mutually exclusive.

It is completely legitimate, if not indeed admirable, that the Taoiseach should aspire to the delivery of both goals. - Yours etc.,
