Tax avoidance by multinationals

Sir, – Fintan O’Toole is missing the point when he sees the issue of multinational firms avoiding tax as merely a matter of Irish parliamentary accountability (“Parliamentary accountability: A nefarious British plot”, Opinion and Analysis, July 16th).

Contrary to what Mr O’Toole advocates, those who depend for their jobs on international firms operating here would not see it as being either “a public service” or “in the public interest” for Ireland alone to seek to solve this problem. It is an international problem and what he calls “a sober, cold and forensic look” at the subject will have to be done in an international forum. – Yours, etc,
