Sir, - The powers that be are proposing to deregulate the taxi industry, which will almost certainly lead to many full time taxidrivers leaving the trade, and to an extremely patchy taxi service at non-peak times. This is being done to cater for an unbelievable load on the taxi service on weekend nights and to reduce the problem of drunken street violence.
Has anyone considered simply allowing licensed establishments to set their own hours? This would remove the sudden glut of people leaving pubs, and make the streets of Dublin slightly safer. Obviously there would be a period of alcohol-fuelled madness, but I believe this would be temporary.
Am I missing something here? - Yours, etc.
