Taxing matters

Sir, – With growing speculation that the Government (fuelled by statements from Government itself) might reduce taxes in the next budget, would it not make better sense for the Coalition to retain the current tax levels and do away with the ridiculous water charge and even reduce the other ludicrous tax, the residential property tax? It seems to me that it would be preferable, and more equitable, to have a single kind of tax for all the money the Government wants to take from us. The idea of reducing income tax seems semantic when it’s being offset by the introduction of these alternative taxes that are certainly not based on ability to pay. – Yours, etc,
