A chara, – I’m shocked but not surprised to see yet another stealth tax by the Government: this time on 115,000 pensioners who have their own as well as the State pension. Many of them are now going to be up to €4,400 per year for a single person or €8,800 per year for a couple worse off because they’ll now be paying tax on their pensions which they worked hard for all their lives.
Why don’t the Revenue Commissioners go after all the big tax evaders instead of vulnerable and soft targets like the pensioners? Not that the pensioners will be a pushover – as they showed a few years ago when they resisted the Government’s attack on their medical cards. – Is mise,
Sir, – Irish pensioners must realise that they have consistently been spared the brunt of austerity measures inflicted in successive budgets. The young people of Ireland can only take so much. It is time to recognise that we are in this together, young and old. – Yours, etc,
