Sir, - It is not unusual during industrial disputes for the parties to come under a more critical public gaze than would normally be the case. The current teachers' dispute is no exception and no doubt many in that profession are feeling hurt by some of the comments made about them in recent times.
In this context it my be timely for me to say a public word of appreciation to all those teachers who have supported Concern's work in the developing world for the past 32 years. Teachers are an essential part of our development education work. They are key players in the organisation of the Concern debates and many actively co-ordinate fundraising efforts for us, particularly at this time of the year when we hold our Christmas Fast.
It is not our place to make any comment on the dispute other than to hope that it will be speedily resolved and teachers restored to their esteemed position in society. - Yours, etc.,
David Begg, Chief Executive, Concern, Camden Street, Dublin 2.
