Sir, - So the ASTI has entered new negotiations with the Government because its members will be refunded the pay docked while they were on strike.

Hardly a tough decision. Perhaps this is the start of a new Government policy whereby all workers can take industrial action and still get paid? I rather feel it is symptomatic of the general attitude of the ASTI: wanting all the benefits of private sector employment while enjoying all that is good about public-sector employment.

I have no difficulty with the ASTI looking for pay increases and with the theory of pay relativity with other graduates. The ASTI has a strong case in absolute terms. However, why is the union not prepared to take on the risks endured by these other graduates and workers? To enjoy the benefits of private-sector employment one must also accept performance indicators, productivity measures and other simple economic truths.

How many ASTI members will spare a thought for the workers of Ebeon? How attractive are share options, profit sharing and Celtic Tiger salaries now?
