Sir, – Tom Moylan (August 5th) suggests computer programming should be taught in Irish schools. The UK has recently announced the revision of its curriculum to include coding.
The problem in Ireland appears to be the lack of certified teachers capable of teaching the subject. Computer programmers who have no teaching qualifications are precluded from filling this void.
An interim approach could be the replacement of the formal requirement for a teaching diploma with recognition of experience teaching coding at Coder Dojo or similar, and contract positions created specifically or the teaching of programming. Retired computer programmers could fill the gap, given the opportunity and a short training course.
It is, however, unlikely that the rigid structure of the education system, not to mention the teaching unions, would be capable of the flexibility necessary for the implementation of an effective solution to the problem. – Yours, etc,
