Sir, – Any attempt by the Minister for Education to block teachers from taking career breaks will lead to those teachers resigning their teaching posts and being lost to the Irish education system forever (News, January 26th).
The teaching recruitment crisis mirrors the nursing recruitment crisis. A reasonable salary, good working conditions and being treated with respect are the key tactics to attract and retain staff. Heavy-handed approaches are not the solution. – Yours, etc,
