Teaching religion in schools

Sir, – I heartily agree with Rebekah Reville Joy (Letters, November 25th).

As religion is perhaps one of the most important aspects of life to the vast majority of those we share the planet with, it is a good idea to have an understanding of the various faiths, beliefs and ethical systems.

Spirituality runs in a deep seam through a person and having an intellectual knowledge – at least – of another’s beliefs, is something that can only build empathy between us and help to produce a more harmonious society.

I’m glad to see the changes that have occurred since my school days when “religious education” meant local indoctrination at the expense of other faiths.
