Teenagers and alcohol

Sir, – It made interesting and pleasurable reading (Home News, March 16th) to discover that Irish teenagers have one of the lowest levels of alcohol consumption in Europe, according to research from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Based on these findings, may I suggest that special-interest groups such as Alcohol Action Ireland and some TDs who regularly jump on the populist bandwagon of slamming our teenagers’ drink consumption study the WHO research and congratulate our teenagers .

I doubt if RTÉ will give much airtime to these findings as it is clearly at odds with its programmes which depict teenage drinking as out of control.

It is an insular, provincial, parochial perception and thankfully at odds with the WHO findings.
