Sir, - I applaud Sally O'Brien's defence of TnaG (October 14th) in response to Kevin Myers's Irishman's Diary column on the subject.
Teilifis na Gaeilge has attracted criticism from all the usual cynics, the same people who would have been in the language freedom movement back in the 1960s. However, this is only to be expected; par for the course. But when the fledgling station comes in for criticism from Donncha O hEallaithe, a member of the station's own council, it is time to cry halt. Mr O hEallaithe's recent attack on the station fed fodder to The Sunday Times. I hope he is happy with that. I would strongly recommend that the relevant Minister remove him from Comhairle Teilifs na Gaeilge.
Apart altogether from its excellent programming, Teilfis na Gaeilge is providing new and exciting career opportunities for young people from all over the Gaeltacht, directly through the station, and also through the many production companies scattered throughout the Gaeltacht. Indeed, recently TV3 has drawn from the highly skilled pool of young Gaeltacht people produced by the station to meet some of its key staffing requirements. This may not have pleased TnaG initially, but it should take a bow for giving young Gaeltacht people marketable skills in such a short space of time. - Is mise, Sean De Cleir,
